Workshop recap

Dreamdoodle’s free Doodle Draw Workshop was a one-hour, drop-in doodling class I led at Vaughan City Hall on September 21, 2024, as part of Culture Days. All you needed was a pen, paper, and a little curiosity.

Here’s what the hour covered, plus a short doodle warm-up you can try at home today.

What the workshop covered

The workshop moved from the basics to a page full of your own doodles in four parts.

  1. Doodling basicsWhat doodle art is, the main styles, and how simple shapes and lines build into detailed designs.
  2. Hands-on exercisesDrawing whimsical characters and intricate patterns to start finding your own style.
  3. Tools and techniquesPens, markers, and paper: the same simple tools you can use at home.
  4. Share and get feedbackA chance at the end to show your doodles to the group and hear what others see in them.

Try it at home: a 10-minute doodle warm-up

The warm-up below follows the same idea the workshop was built on: start with simple shapes and lines, then build them into something detailed. It takes about 10 minutes.

  1. Fill a page with shapesDraw circles, squares, triangles, and squiggly lines across a sheet of paper. Don’t plan. Just keep the pen moving.
  2. Turn three shapes into charactersAdd eyes, a mouth, ears, or a tail to any three shapes. A circle becomes a raccoon, a triangle becomes a fox.
  3. Fill the gaps with patternsFill the empty spaces with dots, stripes, waves, or tiny repeated shapes until the page feels full.
Tip

Use a pen or marker instead of a pencil. You can’t erase, so every wobbly line becomes part of the doodle.

Keep doodling
